Connect an iPhone

The connection is short. The settings on the phone are the long part, and they are the next page.

Do this#

  1. Use a data cable

Not charge-only. They look identical and many carry no data lines. A phone that does not appear at all is usually the cable.

  2. Unlock and tap Trust

iOS asks the first time, and the phone has to be unlocked for the prompt to appear. Accept Xcode's prompt too if it raises one.

  3. Assign an Account

A Device runs one Account's day, so tame asks which before preparing anything. See Add an Account.

  4. Press Make Device Ready

Installs the runtime and checks the connection. Needs you there the first time. After that, plugging the phone back in prepares it on its own.

Name the Device something you will recognise on a shelf of identical phones. That name is what appears in Activity at 3am.

More than two or three phones#

Use a powered USB hub. Phones on an unpowered one disconnect under load, and it presents as Devices dropping at random rather than as a power problem.

If it does not appear#

  1. The cable. Swap it for one you know carries data.
  2. The Trust prompt. Unlock and look. If you tapped Do Not Trust, unplug, forget the computer in Settings, Privacy, plug in again.
  3. The port or hub. Try the phone directly in the Mac.
  4. Developer Mode, which may not be in Settings yet. See Troubleshooting.
