iPhone settings tame needs

Ten settings, in order. Steps 1 and 2 have a restart between them, and step 2 is the one people miss.

iOS does not expose seven of these to a connected Mac, so tame cannot check them. That is why this is a checklist rather than a screen in the app. See Preflight.

1. Developer Mode on#

Settings, Privacy and Security, Developer Mode. The phone restarts.

Required from iOS 16. Without it the runtime will not launch.

2. Enable UI Automation on#

The same Developer menu, and it only appears after the restart from step 1.

This is the step most often missed, and it is deceptive: the runtime installs, it launches, and then it cannot tap anything.

3. Trust this Mac#

Plug in with a data cable, unlock the phone, tap Trust. Accept Xcode's prompt if it raises one.

4. Light appearance#

Settings, Display and Brightness, Light.

Some state is read as colour. An unliked heart is a white outline and a liked one is filled red, same place, same size. Dark mode changes what that test sees.

5. Auto-Lock: Never#

Settings, Display and Brightness, Auto-Lock. A locked screen is a blind Session.

6. No passcode#

Settings, Face ID and Passcode. A Device that can lock cannot be automated, which is why the phone should be a dedicated one.

7. Reduce Motion on#

Settings, Accessibility, Motion, Reduce Motion.

Reduce Motion helps screens settle between gestures by replacing slides and zooms with short fades.

8. StandBy off#

Settings, StandBy.

A charging phone on its side otherwise shows a clock instead of the app. Every look then sees the wrong screen while the Device reports healthy.

9. Auto-Brightness off, brightness up#

Settings, Accessibility, Display and Text Size, Auto-Brightness. Then raise the slider.

Keep the screen bright and readable. Auto-brightness can dim a Device while it is working.

10. iCloud Photos off#

Settings, Apple Account, iCloud, Photos, Sync this iPhone.

This is a dedicated Device. Photos arriving from another Device could appear in a Platform picker and make the wrong media available during a Post.

And one prompt, during setup#

Press Make Device Ready with the phone unlocked. If iOS asks whether the automation helper may access Photos, tap Allow. tame raises that prompt during setup so it never interrupts a Post later.

If iOS shows Untrusted Developer, open Settings, General, VPN and Device Management, trust the Apple Account shown there, and press the button again.

Ten settings, once per phone

Set a phone up once and it stays set up.
